Today we discussed supporting ideas and some key factors to being successful on the final paper.  We wrote an essay as a class and then discussed the essays that were written last Wednesday.  Please don’t forget a pen and a blue book for your final on Wednesday.  We also signed up for conferences today, so if you missed class today you will go to the end of the list.

Rough draft of your final paper – extra 5 pts for a typed draft.

Today we discussed note cards and the final in-class essay that will be next Wednesday.  I will give you the worksheets you missed on Monday if you missed today.  We also completed an in class essay.  This essay will not be able to be made up if you missed class today.  I will be grading the essays over the weekend and giving feedback on Monday before the final. 

Homework:

Complete 3 Source Cards from your three articles associated with your topic.

Complete 10-15 note cards with a paraphrase or quotation from your articles.

Complete a rough outline of your paper.

 

Tday we discussed our next paper on persuasive writing.  We also did some research and went over how to use notecards as a type of organiztion for your ideas.

Homework:

Complete a T chart on ways you agree and disagree with your topic.  Print out three examples from online jounals, magazines, or reputable webistes, and have note cards for Wednesday.

Today we discussed sentence combining, went over the quiz, and conferenced about the paper on flag burning. 

Your homeword is to read 289-304 and complete the Before You Read and After You Read Questions.  You will also need to read 143-146 and complete exercise 4.5, 4.6, 4.7, 4.8 and do only the odd numbers.  Your final flag burning paper is due.  With the paper you will be required to turn in your T Sheet, Rough Draft (s), Paraphrasing worksheet, and rubric.  I will give you points accordingly.

Sentence Combining

I will not be here on Monday.  We will be discussing comma splices, run on sentences, and fragments.  You will be peer editing the rough drafts that you wrote on Wednesday.  I am also asking that you insert the staments you created when you paraphrased and quoted the readings on flag burning into your rough drafts. 

You will be given time to work on your CD-ROM homework and typing your rough draft which is due on Wednesday.

Today we discussed summarizing and paraphrasing.  The journal was the handout listed below requiring you to agree or disagree with the statement “There should be a ban on flag burning.”  This is also the topic for your essay rough draft which was done in class today.  If you missed class today you can take 55 minutes to write or type this essay on your own, but please limit yourself to the time limit.  You will need the rough draft to participate in Monday’s class.

There was also a quiz today.  There will be a substitute Monday.  If you missed class today you can go to the media center to complete the quiz during the time alloted for journaling.

We also discussed the time line for the paper on flag burning and the assignments that will be due on Wednesday April 16th.  Even though I will not be in class there will be a substitute and you are expected to be in attendance.

Homework:

Complete CD ROM sections Fragments, Run-On’s, and Subject Verb agreement under Grammar Punctuation and Mechanics with  Essays available for extra credit.  

Second rough draft of your essay which includes the paraphrasing and quotations from the worksheet listed below labeled Paraphrasing.  Once you have written your rough draft you will take the examples you listed and place them into key parts of your rough draft as supporting information.  If this is confusing, and most people thought it was, please ask a classmate on Monday to explain it to you.

Summarizing

Today we discussed active reading, finals, and upcoming papers.  We also played Jeporady to prepare for tomorrow’s quiz.  I have attached the power points and the Jeporady game. 

Your homework for tomorrow is to read page 383-387 21.1 and 21.2.  Read page 439-449 and select one article to complete active reading.

Today we discussed Verb Tense and Paragraphs, went over homework and turned in final essays.  PowerPoint is attached at the bottom.
Tonight’s homework
read pages 85, 88-90 and complete Exercise 3.5 and 3.6.  Make sure to read each of the noted articles if you haven’t already done so.  To prepare for Monday’s discussion do the following for each reading…
1. What type of hook is used? 
2.  Is it effective? Why?
3.  Underline the thesis statment and topic sentences
4.  Does the conclusion restate teh main topics and thesis statement?
5.  Is it effective?  Why?

Today we discussed Commas and had conferences over our papers.  Each person who was in attendence will receive points for having their conference.  If you were not able to attend class you will not receive these points.

Conquering Comma’s

 Today we discussed the homework and the upcoming essay assignment.  You will need to pick up the handouts the class was given to help you write your paper on Monday.

Your rough draft is due on Monday and your final paper will be due on Wednesday April 2, 2008 (next week).
